My Sweet Style
Yoga With Style recently connected with a hip new designer, Mimma Fico of My Sweet Style. Her designs came to us via a home event where she attended and showed off her very unique flair (which is totally our gig!). Mimma encompasses so many things: fresh, young and full of life, one can look at her creations and see so many people wearing them. Hippies at heart or with a black dress going out to a main event, she really found a way to express her love of life and share it with others. We chatted with Mimma about herself and her creations. Some of Mimma’s handmade jewelry will be featured on Yoga With Style in the coming weeks as part of our Spring offerings.
Mimma describes herself as an aspiring designer/stylist with a love of creativity. She is truly happiest when she’s creating, doing what she loves, which is seeking out unique one of a kind vintage clothing and sometimes redesigning pieces “to make them even more amazing”. She also designs jewelry made mostly from yarn, buttons and other unique findings and materials. All of her pieces come to life as she makes them, organically, never planned.
YWS: When did you decide to become an artisan/designer?
MF: I feel it has always been a part of me, I never really decided it was just who I was and am. It was only allowing the creativity to blossom as I grew. I just always knew I wanted to be in a creative field, figuring out “where” was my journey.
YWS: here (or how) did you train?
MF: Funny I don’t really have “training” from traditional school per se but I have “training” from a life experience, everything I learned I learned on my own, at a job, reading, through meeting other artists. All this started early and was always in me. I never stop learning, always open and interested in new ideas and admiring new talents, I love it!
YWS: How did your training influence you?
MF: I have always been influenced by life, by fellow artists, music, people in general. All my creations or styling is all influenced by what I experience every day.
YWS: What artists inspire you currently?
MF: Designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs is a huge inspiration, Alice and Olivia. Designers who take risks are my favorite. I have to say I truly admire Betsy Johnson, she has always gone to beat of her own drum and I love that, never compromises who she is for anyone! I also love new upcoming designers such as Alexander Wang, celebrity designer Nicole Richie (Nicole has amazing personal style, and her House of Harlow label is lovely). I get inspired by unknown artists out there, there is amazing talent on the Web that is totally under appreciated…..Being in Manhattan, walking around the street alone inspires me as well. Style in NYC is like no other, and Brooklyn too.
YWS: Is there any symbolic imagery in your work?
MF: Good question, in my work I feel there is always happiness, joy, love…I am a child at heart so all creations, whether it be designing jewelry or styling, has always a little bit of childlike laughter to it. I love mixing edgy looks with femininity, girliness if you will. There are always rainbows and butterflies in my head!
YWS: What has helped to shape you?
MF: Growing up a little…..age definitely helped me mature in a way where my confidence is much more apparent now than ever before. I don’t care as much what people think, I actually feel more true to myself than ever before but always have that playful child in me that I will never let go of. Being true to myself is a priority in my life today and is what shapes me as a person.
YWS: How did you decide on this medium? What are your favorite materials and
colors to work with?
MF: This medium has always been inside me, once I followed the path I felt I was supposed to be on, everything has just been happening at a comfortable pace. My favorite thing is finding vintage clothing or vintage jewelry and revamping them. I also love working with yarn, buttons, sometimes finding vintage pins……also incorporating crafty flowers and ribbons and just creating amazing pieces that make me (and hopefully the people I design for too) smile, and feel good!
YWS: Do you practice yoga or meditation and what type etc. How does yoga affect or inspire your designs?
MF: I do love yoga, I have to admit don’t practice it as much as I should. I try to meditate every day, it keeps me sharp, and it clears my mind. It’s like a mind cleanse every day, to get rid of the gunk for the day before and start anew. I didn’t meditate a lot during these past holidays because I felt so busy and I have never felt more run down and “heavy” in my mind and life ya know?…..So that is a priority for me, I need quiet time in the morning before the gym and I am good…… but Yoga is an amazing gift that I need to bring back into my life, my body craves it.……Essentially, I truly believe in the mind, body, spirit connection…. so doing what you LOVE in life is very important. Whatever you put out into the Universe comes back to you in many messages-you have to be in the present moment to see them…always live your truth.
We love Mimma’s sheer joy and outward light – it is present in her spirit and in her designs. We hope you enjoy visiting Yoga With Style as the Shop By Designer category will feature some hip cool jewelry by My Sweet Style!
