This an excerpt on the speech delivered by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Why International Yoga Day is So Important…. Delivered on March 22, 2015 – Written by Sunil Daman, on patheos.com.

It is a victory for India at the UN General Assembly when the United Nations declared June 21st as International Yoga Day (or World Yoga Day). This came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged the world community to celebrate yoga at the international level, in his maiden speech at the UNGA in September 2014.

Yoga is an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition. It is not about exercise, it’s a path through which an individual can discover his sense of oneness with nature. It embodies unity, unity of the mind and the body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment. On the whole, it’s a holistic approach to health and well being.”

– Prime Minister Narendra Modi

This happened after International Day of Yoga was accepted by the United Nations earlier in December.

June 21 was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014.

As many as 50 countries – US, Canada and China most recently – have signed up for co-sponsorship of a draft resolution which India’s UN mission is preparing for declaring June 21 as international Yoga day.

International Yoga Day

Is International Yoga Day controversial for American Yoga?

Despite the apparent Origin of  Indian Yoga, the U.S. has commercialized yoga by breaking it down into a smaller more marketable parts.   As America began to sell increments of yoga teacher trainings, Yoga Alliance began leasing increments of non-legally binding yoga credentialing at 200/500 hours (now also in convenient 300 hours as well).  This amounts to Yoga Alliance’s profiting – for over 16 years – from the self proclaimed authority of Yoga Alliance.

The process for credentialing has catapulted American yoga into a grey area.
